"In the Surgical Clinical Hospital Hermanos Ameijeiras in Havana, Cuba, was made a very serious study on the action of Acid Peeling in the face skin. The conclusions support the Protocol proposed by us for the A.H.A. Peeling" Glycolic acid is one of the most common Alpha Hydroxi Acids used for face peelings. Taking into account some findings reported from cualitative studies, this work intended to evaluate not only cualitatively, but also cuantitatively, the histologic effects of glycolic acid on the face skin.
Four different treatments were employed: 35% and 50% glycolic acid solutions with 3 and 6 applications each. The mixtures were applied over the face skin on 44 women with fine wrinkles. Biopsies were taken before and after the treatments. The histomorphometrical study was undertaken with the Cuban image analysis software Digipat. The width of the epidermal Malpighii stratum increased significantly in every case. The width of the stratum corneum decreased when using 35% glycolic acid (6 applications), and 50% (3 applications). The area percentage of collagen in the papillar layer of the dermis increased in the analyzed samples. Patients treated with 50% glycolic acid showed increased inflammatory infiltrate. The above mentioned results confirm that glycolic acid solutions improve fine face wrinkles , and it is reccommended the 35 % solution with 6 applications as the best treatment. |
